The actual audition format:

Freeze Tag/LA Tag
Two and three person scenes

Note:

We don't expect you to be an expert in these scenes and games. We ask that you try. Feel free to make mistakes, fail, and let go. Our goal is improvisational THEATER. Make your partner look good and you'll do great.

Freeze Tag/LA Tag:

Scenes are started by two actors. Others auditioning may freeze the scene and start a new scene by (you guessed it)- yelling freezes. The opening movement, and line should justify the new scene and help provide a who, what and where.

This is your chance to warm-up your scene work and get a feel for the other players. Use it. Play as much as you can.

Two and three person scenes:

Each person auditioning will get the chance to perform one or more open scenes. After the first round we try to have performers partnered with others at a similar skill level.  Any member of the two or three actors may get the suggestion. Things we look for in scenes- "yes'and",  not flooring the other player with questions, advancing the scene, creating a who, what and where, and of course acceptance of your partner's ideas. Some of the more advanced things we look for include the ability to be comfortable in silence so that the scene is discovered rather than invented. We also place a high emphasis on the ability to take direction within a scene.

Suggestions:

Take your time in scenes. Focus on the space and environment and connecting to your partner as real people. After the first offer, all that you need to do is respond to the moment. Many times those auditioning think they have to be frantic, funny,  and going a mile minute. The humor or drama will arise from your interaction in the imaginary (emotional) circumstances. Relax and have fun. Also remember to BREATHE.

You don't have to say, or do anything unless if comes from the scene (especially your partner). It is perfectly find to start a scene in silence and use the silence. Talking should be communicating not merely a way of trying to avoid real change and openness to your partner.

If you are new to improv then literally say "yes" and in every line and let your partner lead. Yes "but" will grind your scenes to a halt unless you heighten. Review "Truth and Comedy" and "Improv" if possible before auditioning.

We aren't asking you to be experts in the games. We are asking that you commit to your work and choices and those your partners make. Make your partner look good, and you will do fantastic. Make them the star of the scene, and support them. Our work is ensemble based.

Audition notes:

This is the audition process we have been using for four years. It has worked well for us and for those auditioning.
